Acceptance Auto Insurance is a division of the larger First Acceptance Services Inc. It is a personal auto insurer with headquarters in Tennessee and more than 350 neighborhood offices in about 12 Midwest and South states, namely Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Indiana, Alabama, Illinois, Florida, Mississippi, Georgia, Missouri, Tennessee, and South Carolina. Insurance policies can be bought online, through agents, or by going to any of the offices.
Acceptance Auto Insurance is known for accepting high risk customers and for offering nonstandard policies. Comparing rates with other insurance companies for high risk plans, Acceptance Auto Insurance is appealing because its rates are fairly competitive, if not lower.

Acceptance Auto is another nonstandard auto insurance company licensed in 10 states. Their rates tend to be 40% higher than the top national insurance companies although rates can go lower if you have a good driver’s record. Their full coverage includes:

While Acceptance Auto Insurance has other products like renter’s insurance, its main business is personal auto insurance. The company has the minimum liability as its basic package and the full coverage which includes collision and comprehensive policies. Only in states that require uninsured coverage, Acceptance Auto Insurance adds this third package.
The financial standing of the company is undetermined because none of the major financial reviewers like S&P and Moody have made an effort to assess the company. This is primarily because Acceptance Auto Insurance is one of the smallest in the insurance industry with an estimated 0.01% share of the insurance market.
On the other hand, its umbrella company, First Acceptance has been given a B or “fair” rating with a financial outlook review of “stable” by AM Best for the year 2014. According to AM Best, a global credit rating agency, First Acceptance was given a below average performance grade because of “recurring underwriting losses and decreasing investment income.”
It is also First Acceptance that has BBB accreditation with a rating of A+. This accreditation began in 1998 with only 31 complaints in the past 12 months with no recurring cases.
Also, compared to larger insurance companies you will be required to provide your driver’s license details, social security details before you will be given an online quote. This is because the company’s policy is to do a complete background and credit check prior to releasing any quote. It also means that the company does not do quick online estimates.
Acceptance Auto Insurance has discounts for engaged couples (must be married within a year), electronic billing, multi vehicle, and bundling with home insurance provided you own the property. The company also offers discounts to those who can produce proof of safety certification like defensive driving, show proof of favorable insurance payment history, and special discounts to members of the military.
The exact discount rates are not divulged until after the credit and background check as well as an agent’s assessment and recommendation.

Those who have not had to file a claim seem happy with their policy and willing to stay with Acceptance. But many of those who have complained not once realized that the reason Acceptance was their choice was because they needed a company ready to take them in with their history or driver status. Also, with special cases, it is always faster and easier dealing with dedicated agents than trying to broker a customized insurance plan online – no matter how well designed the website may be.
And while knowing that another accident or incident could affect your insurance and driver’s record, there is now an added incentive of driving carefully to avoid any messy confrontation or delayed action with Acceptance’s in-house service staff.
