How does Safeco RightTrack work?

Most car insurance companies offer drivers an incentive to practice safe driving. Telematics has become a popular and easy way for drivers to save money and lower rates.

RightTrack from Safeco offers drivers up to a 30% discount based on certain driving behaviors. Drivers receive an additional 5% Safeco RightTrack auto insurance discount just for signing up.

RightTrack uses an app to monitor driving, except in New York where drivers have to use a plug-in device.

Simply let Safeco know you want to enroll in the program, and then download the app. Use your Safeco RightTrack login to access the app, and then it runs in the background on your smartphone.

If you are in New York, the device will be mailed to you. It is plugged into the port under your dashboard and begins to collect data right away. At the end of the monitoring period, simply mail the device back to Safeco.

RightTrack monitors your driving for 90 days. At the end of the 90 days, your discount is calculated. You will then receive the discount for the life of your policy, but you can only enroll in RightTrack once.

The good news is that your rates won’t increase even if you score poorly. You can also opt-out at any time, but you will lose that 5% discount for enrolling.

Your driving will determine how affordable Safeco RightTrack auto insurance is for you. The better you drive, the more you save.

You also can’t get a Safeco RightTrack auto insurance quote, since the discount will be different for everyone and it will be determined entirely by your behavior.

Safeco RightTrack reviews are generally good, although there are some complaints that the system is too sensitive when monitoring driving.

What does Safeco RightTrack monitor?

The amount of the discount you receive from RightTrack is based on how you score on a variety of behaviors.

These are the behaviors RightTrack will monitor:

  • Time of day you drive – Driving during rush hour or late at night leads to a greater risk of an accident
  • Mileage – The more miles you drive, the higher the chance of being in an accident
  • Hard braking and accelerating – Multiple occurrences of hard braking or acceleration can show that a driver isn’t paying attention or is driving aggressively

Based on these behaviors, a driver might be a good fit for RightTrack if they don’t drive a lot of miles or during peak times, and if they drive very safely.

However, if you have a long rush-hour commute or drive in heavy traffic where drivers can pull out in front of you, you might not score so well.

Safeco does keep your data for research purposes, so privacy can be a concern for some drivers.

Surprisingly, RightTrack does not monitor for distracted driving. Most other car insurance companies do measure phone usage while driving when determining a discount.

Distracted driving is a major concern and a significant cause of accidents. In fact, around eight people die every day from distracted driving, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

Is Safeco RightTrack worth it?

You can save up to 30% on your auto insurance with RighTrack from Safeco if you score well during the 90-day monitoring.

You only get one chance, but the discount you receive is good for the lifetime of your policy. Your rates also won’t go up if you do poorly.
