The Short of It

  • Travelers IntelliDrive is a usage-based insurance program that tracks driving behaviors for 90 days to allow policyholders to earn discounts
  • The IntelliDrive discount is up to 30% off your first policy renewal
  • The Travelers IntelliDrive app tracks driving behaviors such as speed, braking, acceleration, time of day, and phone use while driving
  • IntelliDrive is one of the few programs that can result in higher rates

Usage-based insurance (UBI) programs are becoming increasingly popular. These auto insurance programs use an app or tracking device to monitor driving behaviors and allow policyholders to earn auto insurance discounts for safe driving habits.

Travelers IntelliDrive is a popular UBI program that tracks behaviors for only 90 days. You can earn discounts for driving safely and learn how to improve your driving further.

What is Travelers IntelliDrive?

Travelers IntelliDrive is a usage-based insurance (UBI) program that monitors your driving behaviors to allow you to earn discounts.

Travelers IntelliDrive setup is easy. When you enroll in the Travelers IntelliDrive program, you must download the IntelliDrive app on your smartphone and enter your Travelers IntelliDrive login. The app will then run in the background on your phone to track your driving behaviors.

Travelers IntelliDrive is a 90-day program, and you only have the opportunity to earn a discount for your first policy renewal. Your rates could also increase if your driving is considered risky.

The IntelliDrive app can detect when you get into a vehicle. The app is supposed to be able to determine whether or not you’re a passenger, but if it incorrectly assigns you as a driver, you will have 10 days to make changes to the trip.

What driving behaviors does IntelliDrive track?

The Travelers IntelliDrive app will collect data about basic driving behaviors, such as:

  • Speed – If you go a certain amount over the speed limit regularly, you may be considered a risky driver.
  • Braking – If you are consistently having to brake abruptly, this could indicate that you are driving too fast or following too closely.
  • Acceleration – If you accelerate too quickly, this could be a sign of reckless or unsafe driving.
  • Time of day – If you drive at night or during rush hour traffic, you’re more likely to be in an accident.
  • Phone use – If you’re using your phone while driving, this means that you’re not completely focused on the road.

The app will also allow you to see a map of your route after each trip, along with location information, but this is not used to determine your auto insurance discount.

What do Travelers IntelliDrive reviews say?

If you look through the reviews of the IntelliDrive app, you’ll find mixed opinions.

One of the most common complaints about the app is that it doesn’t accurately monitor driving behaviors. Many users found it frustrating that hard braking was always punished, even if they had to stop for good reason.

Other reviews mention technical issues where the app stops monitoring trips or stops working altogether. However, some reviews praise the program and the ability to track their driving habits and work toward improving them. Any app glitches or miscalculations on the part of their app might result in unnecessary rate increases for you as the policy holder.

The companies within the Travelers Group have been given an A++ rating from A.M. Best, which means they are all financially stable and should be able to meet their financial obligations, such as paying claims.

Travelers’ NAIC complaint index score is 0.44, which means that Travelers gets fewer complaints than companies of a similar size.

How can I contact Travelers?

The Travelers website allows policyholders to log in and see their policy information, pay their bill, and file claims.

To receive Travelers IntelliDrive auto insurance quotes, you can call (866) 362-1972. For billing and policy questions, you can call (800) 842-5075. To file a claim or for roadside assistance, call (800) 252-4633.

Payments can also be sent to Travelers Personal Insurance, PO Box 660307, Dallas, TX 75266.

Should I buy Travelers IntelliDrive auto insurance?

If you currently have a Travelers auto insurance policy, but you’re not enrolled in the IntelliDrive program, you may want to consider it. If you’re confident in your driving abilities, you could earn a discount on your next policy renewal just for having the app for 90 days.

If you join the program and then change your mind, you can cancel at any time. However, IntelliDrive could help you improve your driving and monitor other drivers on your policy (this is especially beneficial for teens, as car insurance for teen drivers can get pricey).

As we mentioned earlier, IntelliDrive is one of the few UBI programs that can result in higher rates. Therefore, if you know you are a risky driver, you may want to improve your driving behaviors before using the app.

With that being said, getting a perfect score with IntelliDrive is very difficult to achieve, and even the safest drivers will likely be in situations where they get penalized for certain driving behaviors.
