Insurantly Evaluates Some of the Best Used Trucks

In April a survey was done on Best Overall Truck Brand by Kelley Blue Book and the top spot was awarded once more to Ford, a consistent winner in 6 out of the 7 years of KBB surveys. In the United States, the Ford F-Series ranked number one in sales in 2013 and 2014 with sales figures outgunning its closest competitor, the Chevrolet Silverado, by more than a few thousand.

According to McGraw Hill Financial, 12% or 1 in 8 vehicles sold or leased in the United States for the first quarter 2015 have been the big pick-up trucks. Majority of truck-loving Americans prefer the full-size pick-up trucks especially the Ford although other popular brands purchased are General Motors, Ram, Toyota, Chevrolet, Honda and Nissan.

The Ford F-Series

Still unbeatable in terms of comfort, safety, performance, space, and value, the Ford F-Series is undeniably America’s best-selling truck, used or new. The F-150 is a light-duty truck and the reigning star of the F-Series which began its run in 1948 with the half-ton (F-1), three-quarters (F-2) and the heavy weight model or the F-3.

According to Edmonds Trucks, a used F-150 is one of the best Ford trucks with a 4.5/5 star rating. It was redesigned to be bigger, more spacious and have more power and can seat 3/6 persons. The compact 4.6 outperforms the 5.4 with readily available parts that are reasonably priced. It is not a luxury truck by any means but gets the job done. A downside to this model is the mileage and maintenance.

Chevy Silverado 1500

The GM Silverado 1500 is an interesting used truck choice because of the many ways you can buy it dressed up.

With a seating capacity of 3/6, it can be used for work, as your family car, or to impress the boys with the latest infotainment system available in the market.

The used Silverado 1500 trucks have a reputation for being a work horse without frills which means you will have to spend to upgrade the interior if you also want a show horse. There are 3 types of cabs and bed lengths for all Silverado models.

The 2010 models onwards have 6 speed automatic transmissions unlike the previous years where it was just an option. However, if you are looking for a cheaper user truck under $15,000, the Silverado 2003 to 2006 is an excellent choice.

The Ram Pick-Up Truck

Dodge Ram used to be full size until the mid 1990s when the company introduced the new truck design which led to a more positive popular vote for the product. The full size pick-up truck or the 1500 with 2/6 seating capacity was another successful step forward because it came with suspension improvements, more power, and style.

Dodge sold the Ram brand to FCA US LLC which is the ex-Chrysler group. From the time of the Dodge Ram to its current owner, the full size Ram pick-up truck has performed impressively winning Truck of the Year award 5 times.

For a good deal on a Ram pick-up truck, go for the 2002 to 2008 models. There are 2 WD and 4WD models, the Chrysler HEMI V8 and towing capacity of over 8,000 lbs. Some of the features you will find with these models are the rear seat DVD entertainment system, off road package, navigation system, keyless remote start, Bluetooth, and tire packages.

The older Honda CR-V models are touted to be better quality than the later models and one of them is the 2005 model. It has been voted as one of the best small SUVs with its ample space and height, 4 cylinder engine, low cargo floor, and high level of reliable service.

The most admired features of the CR-V are the fuel efficiency, practicality, and maneuverability. It also has optional AWD and replacement parts are easy to find.

GMC Sierra

The Sierra is first cousin of the Silverado and although it was not as popular as the Silverado, it enjoyed a 57% increase in sales from 2013 to 2014. About 40% of this truck is made in North America; the rest is done in Mexico but it managed to be voted among the top 8 truck brands for 2014.

This used truck with seating capacity of 3/6 is noted for having the basic and luxurious SUV style. The older models (circa 2007) also came with choices in cargo beds, cabs, engine, interior, and suspension.

It’s also possible to find a customized Sierra 1500 truck because at that time, there was a flurry to personalize one’s truck. In terms of fuel mileage, you will not be disappointed with the 16 city/23 highway results.

Toyota Tundra

All Toyota Tundra trucks are made in the United States and has a seating capacity of 3/6 . They are not available in Japan and many other countries. This mid-sized truck is known to run for over 1 million miles without breaking down – that’s how popular and reliable it is.

Unfortunately, it only comes in half ton version and is considered a passenger-friendly, recreational truck rather than a work horse. The full size version is available in regular, double, and CrewMax cab styles, a 5.5, 6.5, or 8 foot bed, and either standard 4.0 Liter V6, 4.6 V8, or 5.7 V8 engines. If you want a Tundra, look for a model that is 2011 or later because the earlier models with the V6 engine are not as powerful with only 236 HP.

The other best used pickup trucks you can consider are the Toyota Hilux, Daihatsu HiJet, and Suzuki Carry. The used Hilux and HiJet can be bought for under $5,000 while the Suzuki Carry comes at a higher price tag of around $7,000.
