What is Rivian auto insurance?

Rivian has been around since 2009 but has just recently begun delivering its electric vehicles and offering car insurance. There isn’t actually a Rivian auto insurance company. Rivian provdes quotes and customer service, but uses other top insurers as underwriters.

The underwriters, such as Nationwide, offer specialized coverage for Rivian drivers in 48 states.

Rivian uses its built-in telematics system Driver+ to help determine rates. Since Driver+ is designed for safer driving, rates are lower for drivers who depend on the system the most.

Driver + uses a combination of 11 cameras, five radars, and 12 ultrasonic sensors to perform tasks such as changing lanes and steering.

Rivian boasts that the Driver+ system will also allow it to diagnose and even repair the vehicle without it needing to come to the specialized repair facilities.

However, automated driving is fairly new, and not all states agree on how it should be handled.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there are different levels of automated driving. Each state determines the types of automated driving allowed and who is responsible in the event of an accident.

How do you cancel Rivian auto insurance?

Because Rivian car insurance is offered through underwriters, you will need to find out the cancellation policy of that particular company. However, there are some steps you can take to make the process go as smoothly as possible.

Steps to canceling car insurance include:

  • Find out when your current policy ends. Depending on your auto insurance company, you may be charged a fee to cancel your policy early. It may be cheaper to switch insurers when your policy expires.
  • Shop around for new coverage. Each company will weigh your personal factors differently and offer different rates. Compare multiple companies to find your best deal.
  • Finalize your new coverage. Pick your start date and get your policy ready to begin.
  • Let your current insurer know you’re leaving. You will need your policy number and the date you want your policy to end.

It’s very important that your new policy begins before your old policy ends. This helps you avoid a lapse in coverage that can lead to fines and a higher insurance rate when you do get coverage again.

How do you file an auto insurance claim with Rivian?

As with canceling your coverage, each auto insurance company will have its own process for filing a claim. While many insurers let you begin the claims process online or through an app, some will require you to submit paperwork before getting the process started.

When filing an insurance claim, make sure you have all of the documentation you need, such as a police report and pictures of the damage.

What are the Rivian auto insurance ratings?

Although ratings are very important when choosing an auto insurance company, Rivian doesn’t actually have ratings since it uses other companies as underwriters for coverage. We can look at the ratings for Nationwide to get an idea of the type of underwriters used by Rivian.

A.M. Best rates companies based on how financially sound they are. Nationwide received an A+ rating, showing a superior ability to meet financial obligations.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) rates companies on how well they interact with customers. Nationwide earned an A+ rating as well as accreditation.

Rivian Auto Insurance: The Bottom Line

Rivian car insurance is offered to drivers who buy one of the company’s electric vehicles. While Rivian itself doesn’t offer coverage, it does use well-established underwriters such as Nationwide for coverage.

Drivers who use the built-in telematics system, called Driver+, will see much lower rates than drivers who prefer to do all of the driving themselves. Driver+ is reported to help keep drivers safer by automatically performing tasks like braking and changing lanes.

While some drivers can get affordable Rivian auto insurance, rates depend on how much drivers are willing to use the Driver+ system. Drivers are also not locked into buying insurance through the company, so they should shop around for coverage.
